The city has signed off on a proposal for a 54-story office block planned by Multiplex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RSHP\u2019s plans for a 54-story tower at 99 Bishopsgate in the City of London have been given the green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recommendation from planning officers to approve the application was supported by councillors this morning: 17 voted “for,” none against, and two abstained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Construction of the 100,000 square-meter building could begin as early as next year, according to its developer, Brookfield, which has selected its subsidiary company, Multiplex, as the main contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shravan Joshi, chair of the city\u2019s planning and transport committee, said: \u201cThe much-needed office development in the City of London has been approved, and it\u2019s a testament to the confidence global investors have in the local real estate market as well as in the UK economy as a whole.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe 99 Bishopsgate scheme will also provide Square Mile with one of the largest public space upgrades in recent history, increasing the city\u2019s \u2018pedestrianism\u2019 and making it a safer and more pleasant place to travel through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The building will be demolished down to ground level, replacing the existing 28-story building, which currently serves as Multiplex\u2019s UK base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The replacement scheme will include a significant new public space at ground level with food and retail markets, new pedestrian routes, and a separate six-story cultural building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
City planners said ahead of the committee meeting that the proposals “radiate architectural excellence” and will provide an “exceptional new addition” to the edge of the main cluster of towers in the Square Mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, they have been criticized by Historic England and St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral, which have lodged objections, expressing concerns over the potential impact of the scheme on protected views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 99 Bishopsgate project team includes T&T Alinea for cost management, AKT II for structural engineering, Ramboll for MEP services, Atelier Ten for sustainability, Momentum for transport, GIA for sunlight and wind studies, Trium Environmental Consulting for environmental matters, and Andy Sturgeon as landscape architect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
